Want to Lose Weight? Eat.

I’ve mentioned in a previous post – and in my eBook – that I don’t think fitness should involve daily math homework, that you shouldn’t spend the rest of your life opening your calorie tracker every time you eat.

In the short term, however, it’s a good idea, and not just for those of you who are eating too much and/or eating the wrong stuff. When I get a three-day food diary from a new client who has been trying to lose fat and has hit a wall, nine times out of ten the reason is that he/she is not eating enough.

The “calories in, calories out” mantra is true in a very basic sense, but sustained fat loss requires more than just eating less, especially if you’re working out regularly. It requires eating more of the right foods to not only fuel your workouts but also convince your brain that you’re not starving. Our brains did not evolve with a grocery store or restaurant on every corner. Undereat, and it will not let go of excess fat.
